Oak Lawn Community High School District 229 seeks student representatives for the Board of Education

Oak Lawn Community High School District 229 is proud to announce the search for two dedicated and passionate student representatives to serve on the Board of Education at the start of the 2024-25 school year. One rising Junior and one rising senior will be selected to serve as representatives to the Board.  District 229 Superintendent, Dr. Shahe Bagdasarian stated that “This unique opportunity empowers students to actively participate in shaping the educational landscape of our school district.”

While the student board members don’t vote at meetings, the selected candidates will work closely with the Board of Education to advocate for the needs and interests of their peers. By bridging the gap between students and policymakers, these representatives will play a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and driving positive change at Oak Lawn Community High School.

District 229 School Board President, Rob Loehr, is thrilled to incorporate student voice into School Board meetings. “This is an exceptional opportunity for students to make a meaningful impact on their educational experience and contribute to the advancement of our district.” noted Loehr. All eligible students are encouraged to apply for the prestigious role. Oak Lawn Community High School District 229 welcomes applications from students of all backgrounds and experiences.

An email with a link to the application was sent to all students. Students who wish to be considered as a school board representative must submit their application by May 17. 

Responsibilities of Student Board Representatives

  1. Attend monthly Board of Education meetings and actively contribute to discussions
  2. Provide input on policies, initiatives and decisions affecting students.
  3. Act as a liaisons between the student body and Board of Education
  4. Organize and participate in student forums to gather feedback and suggestions.
  5. Collaborate with school administrators, faculty and fellow students to address concerns and implement solutions.l

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled as a full-time student at Oak Lawn Community High School
  • Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Exhibit leadership qualities and a commitment to student advocacy
  • Willingness to dedicate time outside of school hours to fulfill responsibilities.
